What PPEs are required for landscaping work?

In France, there are many occupational accidents our illness with work stoppage in the landscape sector every year.

Fortunately, most of these are not fatal, but they do show that proper equipment – from head to toe – is necessary for good protection.

What are the risks faced by landscape professionals? What PPE is required for their work? And above all, what references should you choose from the dedicated ROSTAING gloves ranges?

What is landscape design?

First of all, landscaping refers to the practice of planning, designing, but also maintaining green spaces and gardens.

The landscape sector therefore encompasses several trades, from landscape workers to pruners, architects and even creative landscape gardeners.

On a daily basis, these professionals work and evolve in contact with fauna and flora, but also with specific tools and potentially dangerous products. As a result, they may be exposed to occupational hazards of the following nature:

  • Biological: linked to the surrounding fauna and flora (bites, insect stings, pollen allergies)
  • Physical: linked to the use of their tools (cutting, spading, felling, pruning, etc.)
  • Chemical: due to the use of phytosanitary products.

Therefore, full protection is essential to guard against potential burns, cuts or abrasions.

What PPEs for landscape professionals?

Head protection

In order to face the risks of impact, the wearing of a helmet (standard NF EN 397/A1) is strongly recommended, particularly during tree felling or pruning work.

Eyes protection

To avoid any risk of irritation when using chemical agents and to protect against allergies or splashes, protective glasses (NF EN166) are recommended.

Hearing protection

It is preferable to use earplugs (NF EN 352-2) or noise-reducing headphones (NF EN 352-4 and 5) when using motorised equipment.

Respiratory protection

Beware of toxic and irritating vapours as well as sawdust, dust and pollen! To protect your lungs, there is nothing like a P3 mask (EN 405 or EN 140 standard) or a mask with a gas filter.

Workwear for landscapers is adapted to the sometimes harsh conditions of outdoor work:

  • Thermoregulation (NF EN 340)
  • Rain protection (NF EN 343)
  • Cold protection (NF EN 342)
  • Cut protection(NF EN 381)

Foot protection

It is advisable to choose safety shoes that meet the criteria of EN ISO 20345. For sharp work, footwear must have the P specification to certify its puncture-resistant properties.

Hand protection

Of course, landscaping activities require complete and optimal hand protection. Therefore, workers should be equipped with PPE that complies with EN 420 and EN 388 but also with EN 511 for cold weather.
