On April 21, 2018 the new PPE Regulation 2016/425 came into effect.  What are the repercussions for my PPE ?

ECT must be periodically renewed, which provides increased PPE control over time.

Declaration of conformity :
Manufacturers provide a declaration of conformity delivered with the product or on the Internet in the language of the country.

Other minor changes :

  • Mandatory tests for any induced use and removable parts of PPE.
  • Private heat equipment is now considered Type II PPE.
  • Gloves protecting from chain saws or from high pressure water jets fall into Category III.

DEFINITIONS

  • PPE : Personal Protective Equipment.
  • ECT (Examination Certificate Type) : Conformity certificate of product according to the relevant standards in force, issued by an approved laboratory.
  • Declaration of Conformity : Document  in which a company certifies that its product complies with the essential health and safety requirements of the regulations and  in which it incurs its responsibility.
  • Putting on the market of PPE : New manufactured products / Entry on the territory of the union.
  • Availability of PPE : Products in stock.

3 IMPORTANT DATES

  • April 21, 2018

    NEW REGULATION COMES INTO EFFECT

    On April 21st 2018, the new PPE Regulation 2016/425 comes into effect which replaces the old Directive 89/686/EEC :

    From this date, the market players have 1 year to comply with the new PPE Regulation 2016/425 for their future manufacturing processes.

    At the same time, the laboratories will no longer issue EC-ETA for the Directive 89/686/EEC.

  • April 21, 2019

    END OF THE DIRECTIVE 89/686/EEC

    On April 21st 2019, companies can no longer place on the market products manufactured under the conditions of the Directive 89/686/EEC.

    Each product will have to be placed on the market and certified according to the new PPE Regulation 2016/425.

    Nevertheless, products stored according to the Directive 89/686 / EEC may still be available for 4 years.

    END OF TRANSITION PERIOD

    Deadline at which manufacturers and distributors can no longer provide PPE that does not comply with the PPE Regulation 2016/425. This means that ECTs issued under the Directive 89/686/EEC are no longer valid from that date.

    However, all PPE (Directive or Regulation) may be USED until the end of life of the products.
